A tradition of giving
BATH | Goodrich Auto Works has been helping out local first responders by repainting, wrapping or otherwise sprucing up vehicles for years -- but this time was a little different.
For one thing, the late-90s fire truck, recently acquired by the all-volunteer Avoca Fire Department, needed a little more than a paint job.
“It’s a little bit of an older truck. It needed a bit of attention,” Goodrich owner Aaron Kisiah told The Leader. “[We did] a lot of body work, corrosion and rust work on it. We really tore the truck all apart, painted it, put new graphics. Everything involved to make it look new again.”
But Kisiah said there‘s another way this was different.
This project was a way to give back to Avoca, which was the birthplace of Goodrich Body Shop in 1977, and the home of founder Kris Goodrich. Goodrich was Kisiah’s father.
The shop moved to Bath as Goodrich Auto Works in 1995.
Goodrich passed away about a year ago from cancer. The work on the truck was donated in his memory.
Avoca firefighter Nick Kowalcyk said the donation, and the spirit in which it was given, was appreciated by the members.
“Being a volunteer department, we obviously work on a limited budget, and the truck we were able to upgrade to was an older truck,” Kowalcyk said. “We take pride in our trucks, and so we were very fortunate for [Goodrich Auto Works], in memory of Kris [Goodrich], for doing this for us.”
The new paint and graphics was more to the department than just a better-looking piece of equipment.
It was important to the firefighters that the new truck -- which was yellow when they got it -- matches the distinctive look of their fleet of equipment.
“All of our other trucks have signature red, with a white top, so [now] it fits in uniform with the other trucks,” Kowalcyk said.
While this particular truck has a special meaning for Kisiah and the people at Goodrich Auto Works -- and now for the Avoca firefighters -- it’s part of what’s become a tradition at Goodrich.
“We do a lot of donations for the local first responders -- fire, police, ambulance -- different things like vinyl, painting,” Kisiah said. “We try to give back to our community as much as possible.
“These folks [volunteer firefighters] donate their time and they take pride in what they do, the least that we can do is make sure that what they put their effort into looks nice.”
