SAN JOSE — A man was struck and killed by a commercial truck early Thursday while bicycling on Old Bayshore Highway, police said.

Around 5:45 a.m., San Jose police responded to calls of a man lying in the street and found the cyclist’s body on the 1500 block of Old Bayshore Highway, near the junction of Interstate 880 and Highway 101, according to Officer Gina Tepoorten.

A preliminary investigation showed that the man had been riding westbound when a large white truck going the same direction struck him, Tepoorten said.

The truck reportedly fled the scene after the collision and has not been located; there is no description of the driver.

The man’s death is the 49th traffic fatality so far this year in San Jose. His identity will be released after his formal identification and notification of next of kin by the coroner’s office.

In a separate hit-and-run incident earlier this week, one person was killed and another critically injured when a Honda sedan plowed into a Tesla and a Dodge Durango in quick succession on Alum Rock Avenue in East San Jose.

Anyone with information on Thursday’s hit-and-run is asked to contact Detective Eliseo Malvido of the San Jose Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit at 408-277-4654, or anonymously at 408-947-7867.
